IF YOU KNOW WHO WROTE THIS, PLEASE E-MAIL ME, I WOULD LOVE TO GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR THIS WONDERFUL TRIATRIBE!

If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!! When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what, with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .... uphill BOTH ways yadda, yadda, yadda! And I remember promising mysel f that when I grew up, there was no way in heck I was going to say a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter...with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it you rself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on thephone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games withhigh-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids' and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed! Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your rear and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?!

We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little snots! And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire .... imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled!!!!!!!!! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

Oh yea, and a seatbelt was Mom throwing her arm across your chest every time she hit the brakes.

Regards,
The over 30 Crowd

“Techno Granny” Inspires “Techno Teen”
Pittsburgh Talk Cast inspires Australian Teen Caster

Pittsburgh, October 22, 2007, “Techno Granny” is an internet talk cast broadcast run by 58 year old talk caster, Joanne Quinn-Smith and airs at 7 AM every Monday on the Talk Shoe network at www.talkshoe.com. Joanne claims to be the only 58 year old pod caster in captivity with no less than four regular talk casts: “Techno Granny,” “Monday Morning Marketing,” “Professionals with Impact” and “Positively Pittsburgh Live.” Three of the shows air regularly on Monday. Joanne says, “I am a busy person and have just decided that this is my Talk Cast day.” Joanne is President of the National Association of Women Business Owners and recently addressed the NAWBO National conference about “Techno Granny.” She spoke about using pod casting to promote other chapters of NAWBO and also member’s own businesses which is how she uses her talk casts, to promote her business, Dreamweaver Marketing Associates.

“Techno Granny” is a show originally designed to bring baby boomers and beyond up to snuff with 21st Century technology. The need arose because most of her interviewees on “Positively Pittsburgh Live” were not conversant with how to access her show. So she started “Techno Granny” to let people know, “If I can do it, anyone can.”

To educate her generation may have been her goal, however at 7 AM; the originally targeted audience is either asleep or in gridlock on their way to work. A serendipitous phenomenon of the internet, you never know who is listening and in Sydney, Australia, it’s 9 PM. A young man named Ben Wilson stumbled on to “Techno Granny” around the tenth show and has used Techno Granny as homework entertainment ever since.

Ben Wilson is also a pod caster on Talk Shoe and has a following of his own and brought them with him to listen to Techno Granny. As a result the show has become popular in Australia with the 14 to 25 age group and at 7 AM, a grand group of youngsters from across the ocean log on to listen and participate.

Joanne says that often she gets advice from her informal “producers” who help her out with the multi-tasking of running an audio and chat show at the same time.

“Often these guys and gals are in the chat room talking about who knows what while I interview my guest for the week on the scheduled topic.”

Joanne says, “Recently Ben e-mailed me to see if I thought he could run a techno show like mine. I suggested he run it the day after mine for technology for teens and call it Techno Teen.” Ben had been running pod casts of his own but basically audio blogging. Thanks to stopping in to various shows on the internet and regularly listening to Techno Granny,” he has become conversant in interviewing guests and running his shows like a radio show.

So now, “Techno Teen” is a transoceanic offshoot of “Techno Granny.” Ben Wilson’s premier “Techno Teen” show will air at 7 AM, EDT, 9 PM in Australia, premiering on October 23, 2007. Joanne says, “Ben’s show will probably garner more live listeners because of the age group and the time slot, however Techno Granny gets a tremendous amount of downloads after the fact as all Talk Shoe shows are archived for listening later.” Also many people just love the name, “Techno Granny.”

Episode 31 On Line Calendars--Is Your Dance Card Full?

With an on-line social or business calendar you can make your life so much easier by co-coordinating group meetings, sharing your calendar, getting automatic reminders and syncing your calendar appointment with Microsoft Outlook or your Palm Pilot.

You can keep family, friends, staffers and committee members organized from one secure location. You can organize a meeting without the usual hassles. You can reserve a conference room at your business or send out invitations and set a date by seeing who’s available. You can download a free 30 day trial at: http://www.weboffice.com/

What a blessing to be able to organize group meetings, schedule e-mail reminders, avoid schedule conflict and attach relevant documents and agendas.

However, Techno Granny is into FREE! So while it may not be as professionally set up or as fancy, the Yahoo Calendar feature in Yahoo groups is a great way to communicate with clients and friends and family on a budget.

Using the Yahoo Calendar feature in groups is a great way to communicate. First you have to create a group or belong to one. When you put items on the calendar your group is automatically informed of the event. Also, your clients get a reminder if they are members of the group.
Once you have your yahoo group set up, the steps are easy. You open the calendar, you add your event, the event is recorded on the calendar and everyone in the group gets an updated calendar.
What's a Yahoo! Group?
It's where people with a shared interest meet, get to know each other, and stay informed. Your group gives you instant access to:
Shared message archives
Photos and photo albums
Group event calendars
http://groups.yahoo.com/
Also talked about using media calendars to get the word out about your groups activities, some of these are for non-profits only and others can be used with “for-profit events. “ Check the rules before you use them. My examples are for Pittsburgh, Pa. because that is where Techno Granny does her techno thing.
Here is a list of free PR calendars in Pittsburgh.

There are many others, these are just an example of a few. Also in trying to find a definition of on-line social calendar in Wikipedia, we found that Google Accounts has an on-line calendar also with many wonderful features. All you need is a Google Account and if you look around on the net you can find this for free also, at least for now or for thirty days or something. Check it out and let me know what you find. Techno Granny has to move on to the next Techno Thing: Google Accounts--Are You Oggling Me?

Another Granny Blogs About Techno Granny

Found this ladies and gentlemen through my Google Alert on "Techno Granny"

Never 2 Busy to Blog?
The higher powers in blogging say to never let more than 48 hours pass before posting another blog. But let’s look at that. Those powers clearly have already graduated college.
They no longer face end-of-semester papers, group projects and finals. They don’t remember the sweat, the panic, the stress – and that’s just from trying to contact the prof. In desperation, you might write an abbreviated missive of fear: “Finding that research methods are not 'library versus Internet,' but something more. Please advise. Stat!” And the prof will write back, “This is graduate school. You tell me. And don’t worry. You’re doing fine.”

Yes, the rest of us – those not alumni blogosphere rule-makers – still in school spend November and December gambling that we might just pull it off, if we can forget work, families, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and that Thanksgiving dinner for 30 we need to toss together.
Luckily, though, Boomers have an ace up their collective sleeves: We excel at delegation -- or the art of spreading the fun.

For example, I could ramble on here, or I could tell you to check out these really cool audio downloads from Techno Granny, whose show connects technology with seniors. Find her at http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkCast.jsp?masterId=30986&cmd=tc and click on the show that covers your tech question.
Not that you need it. If you are reading this, then count yourself more savvy than my Microsoft Office 2003 program. You already know what a blog is and gauging from the red squiggly lines under the word, Microsoft doesn’t.
***
Well, for crying out loud. Originally, I named this blog Boomer U, which seemed rather clever at the time. But it’s taken. As if any contortion of the word “Boomer” isn’t. And so in the interest of academic honesty, not to mention not having time for copyright or trademark lawsuits, the name of this blog is Boomer2School.

Techno Granny's Comment to Anne Kerven's Blog

Joanne Quinn-Smith said...
Hey,great blog and congratulations on being a bustling boomer.

About changing the name, it could be worse. You could start a show called, "Techno Granny" to disover that there is another Techno Granny from Bulgaria or somewhere dancing to Techno music on U-tube! Rats!

Keep on blogging, there may be a book in here somewhere for you.By the way, if you are wondering how I found you--I have a Google Alert on Techno Granny, so I can find out what the "dancing" Techno Granny is up to.

Go Granny Go! That's a Beach Boys song, I believe from the late 50's, early 60's.

Continued prosperity and blessings,

For those of you who must know the technical words for all of this, I culled this from Wikipedia:

FTP File Transfer Protocol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia—See Below
This article is about the File Transfer Protocol standardized by the IETF. For other file transfer protocols, see File transfer protocol (disambiguation).
"FTP" redirects here. For other uses, see FTP (disambiguation).
FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to transfer data from one computer to another over the Internet, or through a network.
Specifically, FTP is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet). There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer: a server and a client. The FTP server, running FTP server software, listens on the network for connection requests from other computers. The client computer, running FTP client software, initiates a connection to the server. Once connected, the client can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server and so on. Any software company or individual programmer is able to create FTP server or client software because the protocol is an open standard. Virtually every computer platform supports the FTP protocol. This allows any computer connected to a TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access).
Now, wasn’t my version much simpler and easy to understand? By the way, if you get stuck, try the help menu on your computer.

Techno Granny-Episode November 12, 07--Audacity--Bold Enough for You?

This morning my guest was to be Ben Wilson, international Teen Talk Caster and Teen Toonist but he seemed to have some technical difficulties both with the audio bridge and the chat. Ben is an international Teen Talk Caster and Teen Toonist from Sydney Australia and among his many other shows has an affilliated show to Techno Granny, "Techno Teen". His next show is on Tuesday, November 20 at 6:30 AM, EST and I will be his guest so tune in.

So because of technical difficutlties, Techno Granny used her Techno Notes on Audacity straight from the Audacity tutorial at:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/tutorials.html

You can listen to this mornings "Techno Granny" show archived at:
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/30986

You can listen to Ben Wilson's "Techno Teen" at:
http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/59995

Techno Granny is also becoming quite international and Rand Dulo of the show "Ageless" chimed in about the use of Audacity to edit digital recordings. Rand Dulo runs his show from Paris, France. You can listen to Rand's show, "Agelesss" at: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/16282

Here are the notes from today's show. If you are a Talk Caster or Pod Caster, hope they will inspire you to learn to use Audacity. By the end of the month I hope to be able to tell you that I have done more with it than converted a recording form my digital player into an MP3 and uploaded it to Talk Shoe.

    Audacity ...
a free cross platform audio editor.
For new users to Audacity, see the Tutorial in five parts for some basics on digital audio, setting up Audacity, selecting, aligning, and recording.
Audacity is currently in version 1.2.3. This is a stable release of Audacity; it has been tested and works well for most people. However, it comes with no guarantee, and we depend on your feedback in order to continue to improve on it. Please check our website for the latest version. Audacity is a collaborative project, so there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved if you're interested!
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Audacity is a program that manipulates digital audio waveforms. In addition to recording sounds directly from within the program, it imports many sound file formats, including WAV, AIFF, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis. PCM formats of 8,16,24 and 32-bits can be imported and exported.

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/intro.html

    What can't Audacity do?

  • Although Audacity is a very powerful audio editor that works with an unlimited number tracks of virtually unlimited size, it cannot do everything. It cannot :

  • Audacity cannot record more than two channels at once on many systems. Some support for multitrack recording is included in version 1.2.3, but it does not support very many systems yet.

  • Audacity opens MIDI files, but it is not a MIDI editor, and its MIDI features are extremely limited.

  • How does it work - a quick intro for experienced users

  • Audacity works with tracks, that contain one audio file. This file is editable and all actions are undoable. Undo's are instantaneous.'

  • Almost anything is undoable, including importing and deleting tracks!

  • There are no inserts, auxes or buses yet.

  • All versions can use LADSPA plugins, and the Windows and Mac versions can use VST plugins using the VST Enabler (a separate download).

  • There is volume automation via the envelope tool.

  • Editing functions include Cut, Copy, Paste,Duplicate(to new track at same timecode), Split(to new track at same timecode), and Silence.

  • A grid can be activated for each track, and snapping can be switched on as well.

    What makes Audacity unique?

  • Audacity is free and the source code is available under the GNU General Public License.

  • Audacity is cross-platform - it runs on Windows (98 through XP), Mac OS X, and many Unix platforms, including Linux. Previous versions worked with Mac OS 9.

  • No limits on the number of tracks or the length of any track, except the size of your hard disk.

  • Import almost anything: WAV, AIFF, Next/AU, IRCAM, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis files are supported natively, but Audacity will also open just about any uncompressed sound file and automatically deduce the format (using the Import Raw Data... feature).

  • Audacity not only includes many high-quality effects built-in, but also lets you use LADSPA and VST plug-in effects. There are dozens of free, shareware, and commercial plug-ins online that do everything from Reverb to Noise Reduction.

  • Audacity supports plug-ins written in the Nyquist programming language, a high-level language designed specifically for working with audio.

  • Audacity acts like a non-destructive editor, providing multiple levels of undo, but it also writes changes made to the audio to disk, eliminating the need for complicated real-time processing.

  • Label tracks allow you to annotate waveforms (for example, transcribing speech) and later export the waveforms to a text file.

  • Powerful spectral features allow you to view waveforms as spectrograms or plot the power spectrum of any region of audio, and even export this data to a spreadsheet.
    Pitch-changing and tempo-changing effects

Remember you can get all this information and MUCH MORE at:

Techno Granny Borrowed Famous Chef Recipe for Thanksgiving

Okay we are back to grandmothers, even Techno Granny cook, and she does, and also passes on her favorite recipes. Okay, haven't tried this one yet but I have eaten the pumpkin soup and know someone who makes the boreks every Thanksgiving although she doesn't call them that. So this is on the menu as an appetizer for Thanksgiving dinner. I have been the designated turkey cooker ever since my mother's demise because I made the mistake of cooking a "fresh" unfrozen turkey. So this year along with the turkey I am bringing:

Roasted pumpkin soup with apple and smoked bacon boreks (savory pastries), a recipe recently published in Reuter's. Chatting with chef Lynn CrawfordCanadian chef Lynn Crawford is the only female executive chef at Four Seasons worldwide, and was the first female contestant from Canada on the program "Iron Chef America."

By the way, these articles come to me by e-mail once or twice a week in an e-mail entitled NAWBO Smart Brief which I use as my personal "reader service."

If it is good enough for a female Iron Chef and Four Seasons clientele, I figured the La Monica clan would like it also.

Roasted pumpkin soup with apple and smoked bacon boreks (savory pastries)
Roasted pumpkin soup -- Serves 4
4 cups roasted pumpkin
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 onion, diced
6 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tablespoon cumin, toasted
1 tablespoon mustard seeds, toasted
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 cups vegetable stock
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup yogurt
2 tablespoons dill, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
In a large pot over medium heat add the olive oil, butter and onions. Saute for 3-4 minutes. Add the spices and garlic and continue to cook for an additional 2 minutes. Add the pumpkin and stock and bring to a boil. Simmer the soup for 30 minutes then blend well. Stir in the honey and season. In a small bowl combine the yogurt with the chopped dill and season. Pour soup into a bowl and top with yogurt.
Apple and smoked bacon boreks
1/2 pound bacon, diced into 1/4 inch pieces
2 cups apples, peeled and diced into 1/2 inch cubes
1/2 cup leeks, finely diced
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
1/2 pound phyllo dough
1/4 pound butter, melted
salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 375. In a saute pan over medium high heat, add the bacon and cook until golden brown and crisp. Drain off excess fat. Add the leeks and cook until soft. Add the apples, honey and parsley and cook for 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Remove mixture from heat to cool. Unfold the phyllo and place one sheet on the counter. Brush lightly with the melted butter. Top with another sheet of phyllo and brush with melted butter. Repeat until there is 4 layers of dough. Cut the dough into 2 inch strips. Place one teaspoon of apple filling onto the bottom of each strip of dough. Fold into triangle shapes ensuring that all of the filling stays inside of the folds. Continue to make boreks until all the mixture has been used. Place the boreks on a baking sheet and bake until golden brown, about 5 minutes.

I will let you know post Thanksgiving how everyone liked the pumpkin soup and savory pastry. Sounds yummy, doesn't it?

For Small Business Owners with Way too Much on Their Computers

SmartBiz Blog
Windows Home Server A Slam Dunk For Small Biz Too
ARTICLE TOOLS

By Rich Karpinski
The first Microsoft Windows Home Server-based system began shipping this week from Hewlett-Packard and despite the "home" in its name this nifty bit of hardware is a perfect fit for small business storage needs.

HP MediaSmart Home Server If you haven't heard about Microsoft's storage play, here's the deal: aiming to cash in on home user's with multiple PCs and large storage requirements, Microsoft and hardware partners are delivering what amounts to the first mainstream storage area network product. The very first WHS-based system, from HP, went on pre-order on Amazon just this week. For $569 you get 500 GB of expandable storage plus a slew of software tools for managing backup, authorized access and more. You also get some very slick hardware capabilities including the ability to "hot swap" disks without turning off the machine. IT is used to having networked storage. Most home and small office users are not. Other vendors including Iomega and LaCie plan to launch Windows Home Server hardware soon. The server is getting almost universally-positive reviews, not usually the case with first-generation Microsoft products. Want to learn more? Here's a great review today from Gizmodo.

Techno Granny to Other Women on Female Heart Attacks

This is an e-mail sent to me by my uncle and me to you. Thought it was something good that Techno Granny to send out to her female and male listeners to pass on to their female friends and relatives.

Heart Attack Men AND Women!!

Sun 11/04/07 10:42 PM
Pass This On After Reading It So Your Friends don't Pass On!
FEMALE HEART ATTACKS
I was aware that female heart attacks are different, but this is the best description I've ever read. Women and heart attacks (Myocardial infarction) Did you know that women rarely have the same dramatic symptoms that men have when experiencing heart attack...you know, the sudden stabbing pain in the chest, the cold sweat, grabbing the chest & dropping to the floor that we see in the movies.

Here is the story of one woman's experience with a heart attack. "I had a completely unexpected heart attack at about 10:30 PM with NO prior exertion, NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might've brought it on. I was sitting all snugly & warm on a cold evening, with my purring cat in my lap, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me, and actually thinking,"A-A-h, this is the life, all cozy and warm in my soft, cushy Lazy Boy with my feet propped up." A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you've been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel like you've swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn't have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly and this time drink a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach. This was my initial sensation---the only trouble was that I hadn't taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.

"After that had seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hind-sight, it was probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they continued racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws. "AHA!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening--we all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI happening, haven't we?

I said aloud to myself and the cat, "Dear God, I think I'm having a heart attack !" I lowered the foot rest, dumping the cat from my lap, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead. I thought to myself "If this is a heart attack, I shouldn't be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else.......but, on the other hand, if I don't, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in moment." "I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the next room and dialed the Paramedics... I told her I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn't feel hysterical or afraid, just stating the facts..

She said she was sending the Paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to me, and if so, to unbolt the door and then lie down on the floor where they could see me when they came in. "I then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness, as I don't remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting me onto a gurney or getting me into their ambulance, or hearing the call they made to St. Jude ER on the way, but I did briefly awaken when we arrived and saw that the Cardiologist was already there in his surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of the ambulance.. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like "Have you taken any medications?") but I couldn't make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the Cardiologist and partner had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stents to hold open my right coronary artery.

"I know it sounds like all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the Paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and both the fire station and St. Jude are only minutes away from my home, and my Cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stents.

"Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? Because I want all of you who are so important in my life to know what I learned first hand." 1. Be aware that something very different is happening in your body not the usual men's symptoms but inexplicable things happening (until my sternum and jaws got into the act). It is said that many more women than men die of their first (and last) MI because they didn't know they were having one and commonly mistake it as indigestion, take some Maalox or other anti-heartburn preparation and go to bed, hoping they'll feel better in the morning when they wake up...which doesn't happen. My female friends, your symptoms might not be exactly like mine, so I advise you to call the Paramedics i f ANYTHING is unpleasantly happening that you've not felt before. It is better to have a "false alarm" visitation than to risk your life guessing what it might be!

2. Note that I said "Call the Paramedics". Ladies, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! Do NOT try to drive yourself to the ER--you're a hazard to others on the road and so is your panicked husband who will be speeding and looking anxiously at what's happening with you instead of the road. Do NOT call your doctor--he doesn't know where you live and if it's at night you won't reach him anyway, and if it's daytime, his assistants (or answering service) will tell you to call the Paramedics. He doesn't carry the equipment in his car that you need to be saved! The Paramedics do, principally OXYGEN that you need ASAP. Your Dr. will be notified later

3. Don't assume it couldn't be a heart attack because you have a normal cholesterol count. Research has discovered that a cholesterol elevated reading is rarely the cause of an MI (unless it's unbelievably high and/or accompanied by high blood pressure.) MIs are usually caused by long-term stress and inflammation in the body, which dumps all sorts of deadly hormones into your system to sludge things up in there. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

**Please be a true friend and send this article to all your friends (male & female) you care about!

Disclaimer:
This was written anonymously and has been ciruclating for some time. I have included it in my blog so that you will investigate the signs of a female heart attack which in acutality are quite different than those of men. Please do not take this as medical advice and please confirm this information with a competent medical authority.

According to Geek.com which some of my young friends may want to access, BlackBerry Technology has been licensed out to Microsoft since 2003, that means that you can have a BlackBerry brand phone and hand held device or you can have a device that uses BlackBerry Technology. Research in Motion, RIM is the orginal maker of the BlackBerry e-mail device which is now capable of being used as a cell phone and has als been incorporated into SmartPhone platforms, and has been used by Symbian OS phones. Many cell phone brands now have BlackBerry Capabiliites.
Pocket PC and SmartPhone users have access to BlackBerry e-mail technology.
Raul Evangelista uses the 7150 C by Verizon and finds it a great way to keep connectivity and as a time saving device for his small company with a staff of four but a sales staff of 60. Raul has an aversion to the multiple stroke key pad which does not use Qwerty keyboard, so he uses PIM, Project Infromation Management, with his Outlook to put info into his BlackBerry Device. He simply uses a USB cable at night to Sync his phone with his outlook.

Raul finds the device not only time-saving but also creates added efficiency and speeds up communication among his associates.

He was very upfront that ther are other BlackBerry Devices which have Qwerty keyboards and larger keyboards.

Looks to me now like we may need to do a show on PIM, Outlook and Outlook Express, can’t wait—learned a lot today. I just may go out and buy a BlackBerry even though I am on a diet.

How Techno Granny Finds Guests?

A listener and fellow pod caster asked me recently about how I find people to interview. Well, you know how someone asks you for directions to a familiar place and you know how to turn left and right instinctively, but when you are giving directions sometimes you can’t remember the name of the street but you can remember a landmark? Okay, guys, maybe it‘s a girl thing.

Well, I really had to sit back and think about how I found all of these people to interview. On the Techno Granny Show alone, I have had 24 shows so far at 7 AM and had 22 guests. Occupational hazard of being on at 7 AM, two interviewees slept in. I have done 13 thirty minute episodes on Professionals with Impact, http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/33431 so that’s another 35 and my Positively Pittsburgh Live Talk cast http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/18520 is roundtable style with no less than two guests on each show and sometimes as many as five for a total of 80 guests in 33 interviews. 115 guests since March 19, 2007; 115 guests in 7 months, that is pretty phenomenal and I did not realize it until my fellow pod caster questioned me.

I must tell you that the guest format came about quite by accident, no success secret here. Like so many people when I first got on to Talk Shoe, I thought I was going to make thousands of dollars even though I recognized pod casting as more of a marketing tool and it was free and if I made postage for the month, I would have been happy. Early on, hosts were told that live callers and listeners made you more money. Well, since I did not have a track record, I decided to bring my own attendees by inviting guests on the show so that way I would never be alone on the line. Also it’s a lot easier to ask people what they think than always spout off what you think as a show host.

So I began with the premise that if I wanted to educate listeners and convince them to use technology, the language had to be simple. So most of the time, the guest is not an expert in the industry so much as an individual business owner or professional who uses the technology. It’s easy to get guests in that way, because they get a chance to promote their business by being on the show and it serves the purpose of giving listeners practical examples of how to use the technology. Occasionally I do have a guest who has developed a particular product or who is an expert as in the case of Jo Ann Forrester of SI Business Associates who is one of the developers of Price It Perfect Cost Control Program or Joe Reinhardt of Config.com who owns a Search Engine Optimization Company.

An example of how I find guests is these two individuals. Jo Ann Forrester is a marketing client of mine and Joe Reinhardt I met through ITEX, the International Trade Exchange of which we are both members. That’s a national barter group. You can actually listen to an independent Talk Cast that I have done on the International Trade Exchange to find additional information.

For Positively Pittsburgh Live, I initially tapped into my National Association of Women Business Owners associates and also found guests through the Pittsburgh Women’ s Networking Group which is a constantly growing on line networking group. Also as the word gets around I constantly receive referrals from other people. I have also become recognized in the Pittsburgh area as a media source so I do receive press releases.

In addition, I network, I find out what people do and just by meeting people I get ideas for additional shows. If I meet an interesting person that is doing something positive in Pittsburgh, I find like-minded individuals that have synergy to the topic and build a show around them.

I guess you might say that I find my guests while I am out living my life; I have never found anyone yet while I was sitting in my living room.

Techno Granny Cooks?

  • Quick SUPPOSEDLY HEALTHY recipes:

Everyone asks me how I have time to do all I do and still run four pod casts and a blog.

So I decided to let you know all that I do:

Run an 11 room, 100 plus year old house with, as my grandson says, “at least ten things wrong with it that will take me two years to fix.”
Raise a 13 year old grandson without a spouse.
Serve on various boards and committees.
Serve as 2007-2008 President of NAWBO Greater Pittsburgh (National Association of Women Business Owners)
Speak publicly at least twice a month.
    Host four talk casts.
Post on one social network and one blog, at least for now.
Run Dreamweaver Marketing Associates as Creative Energy Officer
Cook at least three times a week so that I don’t have to guiltily listen to two adult sons say, “Did mom, cook?”

So I decided to do one thing that grandmothers are supposed to do—give out recipes.

This is especially since a recent episode made me realize that I should be observing the fifth commandment subset which is “Thou Shalt Not Kill Thyself with Unhealthy Crap!”

I make no claims for these recipes and they are NOT tested by the American Heart Association so if you are on a special doctor prescribed diet, please do not tell your doctor, “But Techno Granny said it was healthy.” I do NOT know; this is just what I think and what I am trying.

Okay, this is what I made this AM, Vegetarian Fried Rice (that means no chicken stock that I know of, and a few additives in the interest of time, Remember I said that I am TRYING to eat healthy.)
This is a quick fix recipe and took me twenty minutes from assembly of ingredients to tasting it. (Sorry I am Italian, I have to have a sauce dish full, about two ounces, as soon as it is done to make sure it is edible to everyone else.)

3 cups of Thai Rice (buy this please any brand at some wholesale food store)
    5 cups of water
Bring water and rice to a boil
Simmer for ten minutes or until water is almost cooked up.

In the meantime, thaw out some frozen pea pods. (I like the big bags of Schwann’s, I can use some and store some and besides the Schwann’s man has three kids to take care of.)

Also cut up some roasted red peppers from a jar, be generous, we are making enough for a couple of days even with Hungry Men in residence.
Okay, 1 cup and this time I used Salonika purchased at Penn Mac in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, a great place to get inexpensive ethnic delicacies, especially Mediterranean ones. Also a great place at 6:30 AM on Saturday mornings to make contact with the rest of the crazy people who don’t know how to sleep in.

1 cup cut up roasted red peppers (If your name is Martha, you can roast them in the oven and put them in a brown bag and peel them after they cool—preferably but no longer on Techno Granny’s agenda)

1 jar or 1 can of asparagus, cut bite size, put this in last as it is delicate and you don’t want it to disintegrate (okay, Martha, fresh steamed would have better consistency but so what!)

1 ½ cut frozen corn (again Schwann’s, the guy is a peddler and so am I—use whatever you have handy if you miss the Schwann’s man)

By now you should have run cold water on some Sugar snap peas (you can get great deals on these at any of the oriental stores in the Strip in Pittsburgh or the market area in your City) I use about 2 cups because it will help me from buying a Dove candy bar later.

I package of Sun Bird Fried Rice Seasoning mix or whatever kind you like or can find on sale, (this is where the additives and maybe unhealthy stuff comes in but it is also where the quick comes in, your choice to find a cook book for the spices but then I am not guaranteeing the taste)

Now you are supposed to scramble an egg or two into this mixture but I did not do that as I was going for vegetarian and my guys don’t miss it.

Okay so all of this stuff gets mixed into a waterless greaseless pot, that seals in moisture. You will spend a hundred dollars or more on one like this, mine looks like a wok and has a glass lid and a death sentence if any of my guys use metal utensils in it and they know it.

So you mix everything together and add, chili powder, garlic pepper, soy sauce and green chilies (I keep a small can of chopped ones that I drain and put the rest in a jar for the next dish that needs spiced up)

I have not taken the time to measure these out for you—be creative. I just sprinkle a little of all over the top, taste it and if it needs more add it. You may have to do this a couple of times sot I will say:

Chili powder, garlic pepper, soy sauce and green chilies to taste.
Caution: do not overdo it at first, you can always add more but if it is too hot you will end up with your air conditioner on in January in Wisconsin or you will have to throw it out.

Okay that’s it, as you noticed this is not necessarily salt free and I am making no dietary or medical claims.

Okay so you want the recipe in real life form, I can do that:

Techno Granny’s Supposedly Healthy Fired Rice

3 cups of Thai Rice (buy this please any brand at some wholesale food store)
    5 cups of water
    Cook rice according to directions

    While rice is cooking:
Thaw under cold water about two cups of sugar snap peas
Chop 1 cup of roasted red peppers from jar
Drain 1 15 oz can asparagus and chop to bite size if needed (add last)
1 ½ cups frozen corn, run under cold water
1 package Sun Bird Fried rice seasoning mix or other brand
    All these to taste:
    Soy sauce
    Chopped green chilies
    Chili powder
    Garlic pepper

    Instructions, read the blog again
Special note: easy on the hot spices and soy sauce, taste frequently, teaspoon full only please

For you non-Italians, try all in teaspoons full until you get it right. This recipe is NOT for beginner.

The Techno Granny Story

No, techno granny is not a bunch of "middle aged" women from Bulgaria dancing to Techno music as seen on My Space. Techno Granny is the host of a show designed to hi-light 21st Century Technology in the hopes that more people will use it. Tecno Granny's slogan is, "If I can do it, you can do it." This blog is a bonified sign that I can do it.

Understand that less than five years ago, the best I could do is turn on the computer, search a few web sites and check my e-mail. I was a total computer illiterate. Now I just consider that my computer literacy is sub-standard because as I interview people on my show, I learn right along with my listeners.

I am here to give the non-technical generation hope. When my kids were growing up, it was "modern math" that we did not understand and now it is every other button that we are afraid to push for fear that we may open up pandora's box.

If you are a business owner, then you need to know about Free Conference Calling, Constant Contact, Search Engine Optimization, Blue Tooth Technlogy, Palm Pilots, E-Mail Etiquette.
If you are a parent or business owner you need to know about the dangers of My Space and Face Book and Blogspot but also the benefits. There will always be shady individuals out there who will distort something beneficial to their own perverted purposes, however we are not talking about them.

Protect yourself by all means but if you are not using some of this technology you will be marginalized out of the business arena or at the least will not be able to communicate with your kids or keep up with them.

Here's a funny technology story for you:
The Cell Phone

A young man wanted buy his mother something nice for her birthday. Mom is just a little older than me. So he decides to buy her a cell phone. He explains to her all the features on the phone. She is all excited; she loves her phone. The next day his mom is out shopping. Her phone rings and it's her son, "Hi mom," he says, "how do you like your new phone?" "I just love it, it's so small and your voice is clear as a bell but there's one thing I don't understand. How did you know I was at the supermarket?"
That was me probably ten years ago and I still feel it’s a good day when technology works.

That should not only make you laugh but give you hope that you can learn about technology too.

More on how Techno Granny got started next blog.

“Techno Granny” Inspires “Techno Teen”

“Techno Granny” Inspires “Techno Teen”
Pittsburgh Talk Cast inspires Australian Teen Caster

Pittsburgh, October 22, 2007, “Techno Granny” is an internet talk cast broadcast run by 58 year old talk caster, Joanne Quinn-Smith and airs at 7 AM every Monday on the Talk Shoe network at http://www.talkshoe.com/.
