Untechnical Questions to Ponder--From Techno Granny

My wild Uncle Jerry from Michigan and my Cousine Lacretia from Florida both sent this to me and I felt like it deserved a shout- a little comic relief for a change.

Can you cry under water?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What disease did cured ham actually have?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do doctors leave the room while you change?

They're going to see you naked anyway.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours?

They're both dogs!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why did you just try singing the two songs above?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorrhoid when it's in your butt?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apologies if we have not given credit where credit is due, you can blame it on Uncle Jerry and Cousin Lacretia.

Episdoe 42, iPhone--My Phone, Your Phone, Whose Phone?

Title: EPISODE42 -" I Phone,"-- My Phone, Your Phone, Whose Phone
02/25/2008 07:00 AM EST
Episode Notes: Techno Granny discusses some features about I phone and then open discussion of benefits and drawbacks. Should you switch to an I phone?
Hosted by: technogranny
I had some issues this morning logging on to the call and called in 4 times before we got live audio—next week I should be back at my 7 AM time slot. Most of the text that you will see here on the blog today is directly from the iPhone website except for the Techno Granny asides and the Wikopedia definition of SMS.

Show notes:

"iPhone is a revolutionary new mobile phone that allows you to make a call by simply tapping a name or number in your address book, a favorites list, or a call log. It also automatically syncs all your contacts from a Windows PC, Mac, or Internet service. And it lets you select and listen to voicemail messages in whatever order you want"

"With iPhone, making a call is as simple as touching a name or number. I
In addition, you can easily construct a favorites list for your most frequently called numbers and
quickly merge calls to create conference calls."

Techno Aside:
Quickly conference calls from a cell phone, any quick conference call would be a plus

"iPhone includes an SMS application with an intelligent QWERTY soft keyboard that prevents and corrects mistakes,
making it easier and more efficient to use than the small plastic keyboards on many smart phones.
iPhone also displays SMS messages as an ongoing chat, and lets you send a text message to multiple people at the same time."

Techno Granny Aside: how many times have I tried to send a text and have to exit and start all over again or wondered what a person is talking about that refers to something that went before. And that hit three times to get to the letter drives me crazy.

From Wikipedia
Short Message Service (SMS) is a communications protocol allowing the interchange of short text messages between mobile telephone devices. The SMS technology has facilitated the development and growth of text messaging.

TechnoG Aside—for some of us with old timers disease, this is a good thing in case you have forgotten the last text message that someone has sent you.

"An industry first, Visual Voicemail allows you to go directly to any of your messages without listening to the prior messages. So you can quickly select the messages that are most important to you."

TechnoG aside—I like this—when you’ve already spoken you don’t have to listen to that persons message. If it’s a private call message that’s probably a telemarketer, you can automatically delete it.

"With a 2-megapixel camera and an advanced photo management application, iPhone goes beyond anything on a phone today. It automatically syncs photos with your PC or Mac
when you dock. Displays albums with a flick of a finger. And can post your pictures directly to a .Mac Web Gallery."

Techno Granny question? That seems to mean if you do not have a MAC, forget about being able to use all of these wonderful features. Can someone help on this one?

"You can create iPhone ring tones from over 500,000 songs on the iTunes Store. Just choose a track with a ring tone symbol, and then get creative. And each ring tone is only 99¢ plus the cost of the song."

Techno aside: This is where I figure out why the kids like this phone, but as a business person, just exactly why do I need this?
Speaking of kids, the media is rife with situations where extreme harm has come to young people who would not give up their I phones.

"The stunning 3.5-inch widescreen display is the ultimate way to watch TV shows, movies, and rentals from the iTunes Store on a pocketable device. Just tap the touch controls to play, pause, view by chapter, or adjust the volume."

Techno G Aside:
Now just why would someone over 50 want to watch a movie on a 3.5 two inch screen?

"With its advanced Safari browser, iPhone lets you see web pages the way they were designed to be seen. Zoom in on a page by tapping the Multi-Touch touch screen display with your finger. Create a Web Clip that appears on your Home screen for one-tap access to your favorite websites and web apps."

Techno G aside, that sounds sort of like creating favorites on your computer and it sounds like it could be a plus for execs on the go.

"iPhone Maps application approximates your location using cell tower information and enabled local Wi-Fi networks. Drop a pin on a map, then move it to a specific location to get directions View hybrid maps that display major street names over satellite imagery. Even check real-time traffic information. All with the remarkable, easy-to-use Multi-Touch interface on iPhone."

Techno G aside: Sounds like it’s a great feature but how much can you put on one phone? Can someone tell me does this eliminate the need for a GPS or is it just a cheap imitation that will do in a pinch?

"iPhone even has widgets: small applications that give you helpful information like stock reports, weather reports, and more."

Techno G Aside: That’s just exactly what I want—the madness of my computer to follow me but busy executives may find it useful.

U-tube from your cell phone, another reason the kids would like it.

"iPhone uses OS X;. Which means you have access to the best-ever software on a handheld device, including rich HTML email, , and favorite applications including Address Book and Calendar. iPhone is also fully multitasking, so you can read a web page while downloading your email in the background."

Techno G Aside—Multi tasking is good but can anyone tell me how is the reception and how many calls do you drop doing all of this stuff? And I wonder is this sort of like packing your micro-wave to take it to the office with you? Let me know what you think?

Here it comes: The Geek info!

"iPhone uses quad-band GSM, the global standard for wireless communications. It also supports AT&T’s EDGE network, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, which links to Apple’s compact Bluetooth headset. When you move around, iPhone automatically switches between EDGE and Wi-Fi to provide the fastest data connection possible."

Techno G Aside: Sounds like a plan, but what I want to know is: are the numbers large enough that I can see them in case I lose my glasses?

You can find additional info and all of the italics info at: http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/index.html#phone

Techno G aside,
I must tell you this is a very unique site with loads of information and very entertaining.

American Entrepreneur Interviews Executive Director Pittsburgh Technology Council

It’s rare that I have a Saturday AM free to listen to the Ron Morris’s American Entrepreneur show as I have been a single grandmother for six years. But this morning I was blessed to stop in to the show and I must tell you that Ron Morris only gets better with age. I stopped in to the his Talk Shoe network show about mid show in time to hear his interview with Audrey Russo the Exectuive Director of the Pittsburgh Technology Counicl. Audrey is not the average bear as Executive directors go. She is spunky and is a serious “out of the box” thinker. She may be just what Pittsburgh needs to maximize the outstanding technology available in the Greater Pittsburgh Region.

Another of Ron’s guests was Frank Demmler. Frank Demmler is Innovation Works’ Director of The Entrepreneurial Executives Team, also Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business. It does not take long to realize that Professor Demmler is one of the finest resources for Entrepreneurism and a jewel in Pittsburgh’s crown.

I strongly suggest that you download and listen to the archived version of The American Entrepreneur at: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkCast.jsp?masterId=139&cmd=tc Listen to the arcived version of the February 22, 2008 show. I feel certain that my Techno Granny listeners will be very delighted that they did.

Ron Morris’s personal asides about his life vision also easily connects with listeners with his authentic signature style.

Debbie Ducic of "Gutzy Women" on Why Women Should Rule the Internet and the Beatury of RSS Feeds

What an amazing year 2008 is turning out to be! The process of getting clear about what you want and then putting it out into the universe is an amazing thing! Taking decisive ACTION on the opportunities that show up as a result of that process is the trick isn't it? I say decisive because we are given the choice to take advantage of them, give them a miss or put them asidefor "the right time".

But it's so hard to know which isthe best choice or which is the "right" choice, wouldn't you agree? So sometimes we just FREEZE and don't do or say anything at all...like it never happened. We don't followup with people to give them the answers they need in atimely fashion. We bury thoughts about taking necessary actions. We come up with excuses so convincing we even believe them ourselves. Hey, I'm guilty of it! We're just human, after all. That's why I choose a higher power to tap into, to have faith in, to turn to. Sometimes I call it the "field of possibilities" or "the universe", or "the light" or "supreme intelligence" or God. It doesn't matter to me what name I give It.

What matters is my immense faith in that higher power to provide, guide and love me. I am constantly AMAZED at how well that works for me! And I am EXTREMELY grateful. jqsdreamweaver@hotmail.com, I don't want to give you the idea that my life is all fun and games! Like you, I have plenty of "challenges" going on and I ask forgiveness on a regular basis. But because of my faith, I don't remain stuck, because eventhough I might not always make the "right" choices, or take the "best" action based on what I know today, I trust that things will work out for my highest good and forthe highest good of those who are in my life and my world.

Please know that my PASSION is and has been for many years of my life, about creating a world where men and women are loved, respected, included and valued EQUALLY. Every now and then I think we're actually making progress! And I'll tell you why... Having been involved in TONS of community efforts to bring positive change into the world of "women's issues" over the last 30 years, never before have I witnessed such a gathering of women and enlightened men across the world joining forces, masterminding and TAKING POSITIVE ACTION!

Why now? I think it's a result of the REVOLUTION in COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY. That's why I get so JAZZED about it all! It's not just because of computers, the Internet, cell phones, fiber optics, wireless, etc., but the convergence of people across the world who desire to get back to WHAT WORKS, what's natural, what's life sustaining and earth sustaining, what's kind, loving, ethical and moral.

Communication technology is just the vehicle by which humans can now CONNECT with others of the same mindin a way that has never before been available to us...at least to this extent and It's really JUST THE BEGINNING! You just might be saying to yourself, "Yes, but it's SCAREYas well! There are some very bad things that are happeningout there Deb, as a result of new technology." And to that I say, "You're Right." That's why it's so important that we all have an EQUAL VOICEin this NEW technological world of ours, and that we SPEAK UP and TAKE PART in creating the way we want it to work! That's right!

We DO have a say in it because of the change in direction technology is going. You'll hear me talking about Web 2.0 a BUNCH because it changes the way we communicate. We're use to ONE WAY communication. Just think about it: Teachers stood at the front of the room lecturing to us from outdated books. We sat and listened. Radio & TV told us what and who we listened to, what and who we watched, when we could watch or listen, who offered what to buy and why we should buy from them. Newspapers, magazines and books offered one sided information.

Maybe that's why we LOVED our phones so much, becauseat least we could have two way communication! But LOOK, jqsdreamweaver@hotmail.com, AT WHAT WE HAVE NOW: Phone companies now can arrange for us to have two or THOUSANDS of people on a call all at once. Mass Media now allows us to decide WHAT or WHOwe want to watch or listen to WHEN we want to andmany times, WHERE we want to. The Internet allows us to TALK BACK through audio, video, text, pictures, you name it!

IT'S CHANGING the way we do business, politics, networking, spirituality, education, mentoring, fund-raising, art, music, entertainment....EVERYTHING! BUT HERE'S the CHALLENGE, jqsdreamweaver@hotmail.com: It's still dominated by men and BIG MONEY and if we don't step up to the plate, ladies and gentlemen, thisGREAT NEW OPPORTUNITY to bring in the feminine energy and to level the playing field will pass us by and the rules will again be made by the same power mongers that have created this unsustainable world we have experienced up to now.

AND unless we get over our FEAR & FRUSTRATION ofnew technology and multi-media tools, we won't know how,or even have the ability to TAKE PART or TAKE ACTION in the creation of this NEW WORLD. So, in the next few months, I'll be VERY BUSY raising the visibility of women (and Brave men) who are: Overcoming their fears Ignoring their imperfectionsBelieving in themselves and their causeSquelching their excuses Raising their education levelStepping up their activityFinding their voice & passionParticipatingRaising the barPositively changing their world.

Yahoo, Not Just for Teenagers, How Businesses are Using It

Episode 41, Yahoo Not Just for Teenagers

Doug Hammer , a local WSI Internet Consultant.

Doug helps businesses and organizations, understand more clearly how to utilize the power of the internet to help them operate more efficiently and market and communicate more affectively. With 20 years of business and technology experience, Doug Hammer takes the time to learn everything he can about your needs, pains and desires. He explains options in "non-techy" jargon, and then offers customized internet solutions that fit specific needs and budgets.
Through Doug’s relationship with WSI, a global Internet solutions company, he can provide a number of internet based solutions, but specifically focuses in three areas.
a. Websites
b. Email Marketing
c. Internet Advertising (Search Engine Optimization and PayPerClick).

These are the things that we talk about on the show.

Yahoo is increasingly used by business owners for local optimization which is what doug specializes in. You can increase your business by increasing your local visibility.

Yahoo vs. Google

First of all despite the recent news fervor over the hostile take over attempt of Yahoo by MSN, Yahoo still controls 22% of the search engine market which when you consider the billions of searches on the internet is pretty good.

Local Directory

Also Locally there is-a local directory for Yahoo as Yahoo will sometimes find you on its own. So you need to check your information to make sure it is correct. The way to search for your information is to: Key in: name,(comma) City or state. Or Key in: name,(comma) zip code. Also Increase placement for $9.95 not offered by Google. Go to Yahoo site and click “local” for additional info. Yahoo will increase your placement on local results and you can use featured ads. The cost is approximately $10.00 per month.

Search Engine Optimization

Meta tags and meta key words are definitely used but most recently, it’s the Algorithms that matter. It’s no longer the volume of what is done on your site but the relevance and this changes monthly.

These are things that you should be concerned about;

How many links to your site? How long is your site registered for? Do you have articles written about you on other sites?
Doug also speaks about link building campaigns and pay per click advertisement which will seriously enlighten you.
When he speaks bout optimization, he talks about three types: Local, Organic, and sponsored links.

PPC advertising…
Two types:

Manual which can be time consuming but setting it up is free and you can set up your own budget, keeping up with daily changes in key word prevalence is the challenge. Automated system which is a paid program where you can still pay budget but the system does the work for you in adapting to industry specific key words. You can also then check your reports and you have good marketing information at your service also.

Episode 40 Debbie Ducic of Gutzy Women, on RSS Feeds

The show starts a little slow because guest is in an earlier time zone and because of weather the internet was slow but ten minues into the show, it rocks. Debbie Ducic is a great advocate for Women Business Owners getting over their fear of Web 2.0 tactics for marketing on the web. Her blog/forum, www.gutzywomen.ning.com is a great learning and sharing arena for women business owners and also enlightened men.

Talking points: from Debbie Ducic

The importance and need for RSS feeds ties in with the inundation of information that we are all experiencing at the same time that we are all getting busier...especially those of us who are into online and offline social networking.

So the RSS feed works two ways.

Editorial comments: Techno Granny
HTML feed directly into e-mail. Shoots out stuff from your blog and shoots it out to all types of people.
Choose how info comes: RSS feed reader, or e-mail.
Feedburner.com—free service to help. Advanced stuff may cost.
Optimize and publicize.
Automatically sends out RSS feed to various places, widgets.
Sign up in e-mail feed for html.
Word Press, type pad, blogger—blog services

Debbie Ducic additional show notes

1. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email.
Set up readers to let you know when there are articles of niches you are interested in.

2. Feeds also make it possible for site content to be packaged into "widgets," "gadgets," mobile devices, and other bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display blogs, podcasts, and major news/sports/weather/whatever headlines just about anywhere.

• Consumer Bottom Line: Subscribing to feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of online content in a very short time.
• Publisher Bottom Line: Feeds permit instant distribution of content and the ability to make it "subscribable."
• Each time you send blog, you are sending out a notice to sign up for RSS feed.
• Set aside a day to set up all the publicizing information that you can.
• Advertiser Bottom Line: Advertising in feeds overcomes many of the shortcomings that traditional marketing channels encounter including spam filters, delayed distribution, search engine rankings, and general inbox noise.

hundreds of thousands of bloggers, podcasters, and videobloggers publish feeds to keep themselves better connected to their readers, listeners, admirers, and critics.

Apple, through its iTunes Music Store, offers tens of thousands of audio and video podcasts for download, each of which is powered by a feed.

A typical interface for a feed reader will display your feeds and the number of new (unread) entries within each of those feeds. You can also organize your feeds into categories and even clip and save your favorite entries (with certain applications).
If you have a website, blog, audio/video content, or even photos, you can offer a feed of your content as an option.
If you are using a popular blogging platform or publishing tool like TypePad, Wordpress, or Blogger, you likely publish a feed automatically.
Even other non-blogging sites like social photo-sharing service Flickr offer feeds of content you produce that others can retrieve.
There are also tools on the market that can help transform traditional web content into the right format for distribution.
Here's how it works:

Techno Granny and Techno Teen talk about affiliation of Ning with Talk Shoe.

Social networking, was popularized by teens sharing information with their friends online on Web sites such as Facebook Inc., is now a new Web 2.0 horizon in the business world. Thanks to new social networks that enable professionals and executives in industries such as advertising and finance to rub virtual elbows with colleagues.

Millions of professionals already turn to broad-based networking sites like LinkedIn to swap job details and contact information, often for recruiting purposes. Business executives also have turned to online forums, email lists and message boards to sound off on information related to their industries. Forums on social networks are a great way to monitor your market, manipulate the market and increase your credibility by becoming a thought leader.

Take the leap, you don't know who you might meet and what business you may do. A business associate of mine just recently found a friend that she had not heard from for twenty-five years. It's a great way to expand your horizons.

Show Notes from Debbie:

The importance and need for RSS feeds ties in with the inundation of information that we are all experiencing at the same time that we are all getting busier...especially those of us who are into online and offline social networking.

So the RSS feed works two ways.

1. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email.
